To many Chinese families like mine, the dinner table is the only place where we share a few of our suppressed emotions, feelings, and stories that otherwise would get lost in the process of keeping it for ourselves. Through exchanges of chopsticks and vinegar dishes, we open up. But even the best handmade dumplings cannot overcome the crude bitterness of generations of filial piety and trauma within. A tribute to one of my favorite films, Ang Lee's Eat Drink Man Woman.
